"2nd and 3rd Generations take Heed"

I have enjoyed posting all the "growing up stories" but at this time I would like to get serious about our families medical history. This if for all the Conlon's, Farrell's and Cianciaruso's. Knowing some of them do not have access to this blog, I hope someone will forward it to them. in telling this I hope that you all will benefit from this information. I only wish that someone had told me about this years ago.
While my cousins and myself were growing up, we were young and "KNEW" we would live forever. At that time we ate what we were given and also what we liked best. To be fair, our parents did not know that some of the food we consumed was starting at a very early age to potentially kill us. I will try to relate some of these yummy delights and let you know how wrong they were.
I remember going to my aunt Kate's house to hang out with my cousins...when lunch time rolled around, Joey would make lunch for us. It was Delicious, mayonnaise sandwiches on white bread with Devil Dogs as dessert and soda to wash it all down. Knowing what I know now, we started to clog our arteries at the early age of 8, 9 and 10.
When I was allowed to have dinner at their house, it was a feast of fried something, no vegetables, boiled potatoes with lots of butter, bread and butter and a healthy portion of Devil Dogs, creamy gushy cake or some other exotic dessert followed by some potato chips and more Devil Dogs...yum yum.... That was a real treat for me because my mom cooked a little different then her sister. We had a lot of pasta, veggies, fish and no dessert. I am not praising my mom, but my father was use to that type of food so that is what we had... that is why I loved eating at my cousins house.
No one went out for fast food at that time, mainly because it did not exist. The fast food was served at home.
Please know that I am not putting anyone down or praising others..this is what life was at that time...
Now looking back at how we ate, several things come to mind..
Joey died of a heart attack at a young age, even though he passed every medical exam that he had to take every year while working at Western Electric. I had a massive heart attack, even though I thought I was soooooo careful with the foods I ate...Michael had some heart issues which are now under control...
I am not saying that any of these problems were caused by our eating habits but I truly believe that they did not help....
All I am trying to get across to the 2nd and 3rd generations of our clan is....eat healthy, exercise and live a long, long life....and one day write a blog or what ever it is called at that time, advising your families to be smart, eat wise and enjoy life to the fullest...
Sorry is this all sounds like preaching but hey, that is what old men are allowed to do..

Thanks for the advice. I remember my mother saying that when she grew up they rarely had anything sweet in the house;so when she grew up she probably ate more sweets that she should have - but you can understand why. I don't know if it had anything to do with her triple by-pass - but I know heart problems run in our family....love you Don, keep taking care of yourself!
