"Halloween Prudente Style"

No, they are not dressed for Halloween and no, that is not a Trick or Treat bag on the floor. On this day in August 1967, one sister decided, if my sister can have a hat like that I want one too. The question still haunts us until today.., "What came first, the Dress or the Hat"?...That is one only a Sear Catalogue can answer. As you can see they were staying in 5 Star Motel...Based on the Lamp Shade Motif, I think it was the "Tilton Motel and Bait Shop". They must not have been feeling well that day, their meds are on the table, waiting to be taken....Oh wait, I just enlarged the picture and I see by my aunts wrist band that they were contestants on a new TV show."Extreme Make Overs",,,, can you imagine what they looked like before the show ?

There is one thing we have to say for them, they knew how to have a good time and they always did....

"The Clone Family plus two"

This is a picture of my Mom, (kneeling down) and left to right is Aunt Kate, Rose Rae and her sister, Nancy Bontempo.
What makes this pic so interesting, study Kate and Liz's faces and you see an exact replica of Janet and Angela. It's like they were clones of their mothers.
Nancy is the person mentioned in the shoe factory fire on the Stoopview Blog. Nancy and Rose were my mothers cousins in-law's. Rose was married to Bill Rae (Hoagie) as my father called him. Bill was from Scotland and some where along the line he was my mother and Kate's cousin. Due to the age of these pictures I must assume that Rose and Nancy were friends of the Prudente's and they introduced them to Bill Rae....if this is all confusing to you, don't feel bad..a little scotch can do that to you. I will guess-timate and say that my Mom was about 10 in this picture, making Aunt Kate about 12.....I am sure the reason they took the picture with my Mom kneeling down was to cover the fact that Nancy has a leg deformity and wore a metal brace that looked like a Peg Leg...Years later she had the leg removed and wore a prosthesis. So now you have a few more pieces of the puzzle...

"The Prudente Girls"

Paris and Nicole had nothing on them....

This picture was taken in Coney Island (you grand kids must look up Coney Island, come to think of it you will have to look up a lot of things that I mention...have Fun..) circa 1939-1940. The sisters were at the height of fashion, but why is aunt Kate looking at my mother and wondering, "Where did she dig up that dress"...notice the open toed shoes with the ankle straps...We know it had to be before Labor Day and after Memorial Day..due the fact they are both wearing White...( This one I will explain, growing up we were taught that no one wears white before or after the holidays I mentioned above..that was a cardinal rule...and the "Girls" aways adhered to it. )The reason they went to Coney Island was the subway fare was only a nickle and you could spend an entire day wearing your Sunday best. In a time when money was short and days were long, people made the most of a good situation, so our parents and your grandparents enjoyed life for a few pennies...try that today and let us know how you make out.....

"Brian Update"

Brian Perry had knee surgery last week and is doing great. He was able to drive to Publix (a Florida food chain) yesterday to stock up on some snacks, in the event of a hurricane or famine.
Glad you are doing so well Brian.

"Mummy Dearest"

This Story has "The JAFA Seal of Approval"
obtained prior to publication.
The cast of characters are, Joey Conlon 10,
Janet Conlon, 7 (aka JAFA) and me, 7.
Supporting cast includes Kate Conlon and Liz Cianciaruso.
One afternoon, the three of us went to the movies. The name of the movie house was "The 4th Street Dumps"...I honestly don't know what the real name of it was, we always called it "The "Dumps. It was a very small theatre, no balcony and in front of the theatre to the left of the screen was the candy counter. During the movie the man operating the candy counter would walk around with a tray held by a strap around his neck selling Ice cream cones, melting as he walked up and down the aisle.
There was a matron, and old woman ( we thought she was old, thinking back now see may have been about 40) dressed in a white dress and white shoes and her hair in a bun, her name was Mrs Sapienzza. She carried a flashlight and watched all the kids to make sure there was no fooling around. If you talked too loud, she would shine the light on you and give you a loud SHUSHHH.
If you were really being mischievous, she would walk into the row and warn you that she would tell your mother....so, by and large most kids were well behaved. Oh yes, the price of a ticket was ten cents and on Wednesday afternoons it was five cents. For that large amount of money ( and at the time it was) you saw, 2 full length films, 10 cartons, a serial feature ( a weekly movie that brought you back each week to see what happens ) and on Tuesday nights the adults got a free dish. I know a lot of families built their china collection with those plates, but I digress.
One of the two movies we saw that afternoon was "The Mummy" staring Boris Karloff. Although the movie was made in 1932, we saw it for the first time in 1946. I loved that movie, (I actually bought the DVD last year)...at that time it was very scary, but fun. Every time the Mummy appeared on screen, Janet would cover her face and moan a bit...Joey and I would laugh at her and pull her hands away from her face. Walking home after the movie, it had to be winter, it was already dark, we teased her and said the Mummy was going to come to her house and take her away, ( a scene in the movie, where he took the girl and hid her in a cave)...she cried almost all the way home.
At that time my mother's clothes line ran her our kitchen window to my aunt Kate's kitchen window, and my mother had sheets hanging on the line. Being winter it took many, many hours, sometimes days for large things to dry. That night Janet looked out the window and seeing the sheets flapping in the wind, in her mind, the Mummy was coming to get her. She became hysterical and screamed, he's coming, he's coming....when they finally got her calmed down, she told my aunt that we told her the Mummy would come and take her away......so needless to say that night Joey got a beating and the next day when my aunt told my mother, I got mine. When Joey and I were finally allowed to go outside to play, we laughed like hell...it was worth every whack we got. and till today, Janet gets nervous just making a bed....

"Is anyone there ? "

I enjoy posting these bits of family history....but I am surprised that no one leaves a comment, opinion or at least a dirty word
Hope some family member out there is reading these, if not I can really get nasty and tell all the good ( Or bad) stuff about you all....only kidding...but would appreciate some feedback...
The Blog Master...Don

"2nd and 3rd Generations take Heed"

I have enjoyed posting all the "growing up stories" but at this time I would like to get serious about our families medical history. This if for all the Conlon's, Farrell's and Cianciaruso's. Knowing some of them do not have access to this blog, I hope someone will forward it to them. in telling this I hope that you all will benefit from this information. I only wish that someone had told me about this years ago.
While my cousins and myself were growing up, we were young and "KNEW" we would live forever. At that time we ate what we were given and also what we liked best. To be fair, our parents did not know that some of the food we consumed was starting at a very early age to potentially kill us. I will try to relate some of these yummy delights and let you know how wrong they were.
I remember going to my aunt Kate's house to hang out with my cousins...when lunch time rolled around, Joey would make lunch for us. It was Delicious, mayonnaise sandwiches on white bread with Devil Dogs as dessert and soda to wash it all down. Knowing what I know now, we started to clog our arteries at the early age of 8, 9 and 10.
When I was allowed to have dinner at their house, it was a feast of fried something, no vegetables, boiled potatoes with lots of butter, bread and butter and a healthy portion of Devil Dogs, creamy gushy cake or some other exotic dessert followed by some potato chips and more Devil Dogs...yum yum.... That was a real treat for me because my mom cooked a little different then her sister. We had a lot of pasta, veggies, fish and no dessert. I am not praising my mom, but my father was use to that type of food so that is what we had... that is why I loved eating at my cousins house.
No one went out for fast food at that time, mainly because it did not exist. The fast food was served at home.
Please know that I am not putting anyone down or praising others..this is what life was at that time...
Now looking back at how we ate, several things come to mind..
Joey died of a heart attack at a young age, even though he passed every medical exam that he had to take every year while working at Western Electric. I had a massive heart attack, even though I thought I was soooooo careful with the foods I ate...Michael had some heart issues which are now under control...
I am not saying that any of these problems were caused by our eating habits but I truly believe that they did not help....
All I am trying to get across to the 2nd and 3rd generations of our clan is....eat healthy, exercise and live a long, long life....and one day write a blog or what ever it is called at that time, advising your families to be smart, eat wise and enjoy life to the fullest...
Sorry is this all sounds like preaching but hey, that is what old men are allowed to do..

"Conlon Take Out Food"

This is a story about Michael at about age 10.
We were living is Astoria at the time. Michael was at my house for Sunday dinner. Being Sunday dinner it was, what else?, macaroni and meatballs.
Michael ate his fill of the ronnies (as he called them) and meatballs as he usually did....
My mother made extra to send home to Joey as he also loved my mom's sauce and meatballs. There mom did not cook macaroni as their dad did not like it at all....
So when it came time for Michael to go home, my mother gave him a large container with Joey's portion of the loot.
Days later, my mom was talking to her sister ( aunt Kate) and asked her if Joe enjoyed the macaroni...when my aunt asked him, he said, what macaroni ?.....
Upon a complete Columbo type investigation, it was discovered that on the way home, Michael ate the entire container of macaroni and meatballs....but in his defense, it was a long walk..6 big blocks and he had not eaten in over 1 hour....

So that was the first and last time anyone trusted Michael with a take out order..so be warned kids, don't sent papa for take out...
