I was just thinking of Carrie's and My Engagement Party...It was held in a hall in Long Island City....with the longest flight of stairs to get up there I had ever seen. We had about 150 people there and it was on Carries Birthday, November 30th, 1958....The reason I am posting this is I remember a friend of Carries mother was invited and asked if she could bring her daughter or niece not sure which, who was visiting from California...during the Festivities she asked if she could sing, we had a small band there and of course we said yes, she announced herself as Vicky ( some Spanish name) and sang several songs, in English and Spanish. I was impressed how well she sang. Everyone enjoyed her and had her sing a quite a few songs..I don't think she was more than 18 years old or so. We found out a few years later that she had signed a contract and was recording songs and her name was now Vikki Carr....Wish I knew that then, maybe we would have received better gifts from our generous families...only kidding, but I don't think there is anyone still alive that even remembers the party....(copied from her web site)
Vikki Carr is one of the best-loved and most accomplished entertainers in the United States, Latin America and Europe. She is celebrating her fifth decade of a career in which she has won three Grammy Awards and has released over 60 best-selling recordings. Her concert tours of 2006/2007 sold-out shows in the U.S., Mexico and South America. She has performed for the Queen of England, five United States Presidents, wartime soldiers in Vietnam and sold-out audiences around the world. She has worked in radio, television, film and theater. Her music embraces two languages and she is among the first artists to bridge the cultures of the United States and Latin America, paving the way for many performers today.

I remember.
Lizzie and Katie and Madalyn (Kaytie's friend) spent the day cooking - loved Aunt Katie's Telephone Company recipe for potato salad and deviled eggs. We also practiced the hoola hoop. And I wore a green dress. Also remember Vikki. Nonna gave you a set of silverware which needed a polishing.
Fortunately I remember my engagement party (not quite so grand, in the basement) so Alzheimer's hasn't kicked in yet.
This is a story I never heard...so thanks for this gem. This is what the blog is all about, sharing long lost stories that would never be told again if not documented.
Ayn, your party I do remember and It was special too.. if I recall, isn't that the party where the cat was sleeping on the step and Uncle Mike stepped on it by accident?
I believe Rose Rae and Nancy where there thinking back. Its starting to come back to me..
;-)
Love Ron
Ron,
The "party" you remember was nothing major - a get-together I think. Don might remember better. I do know I was in grad school at the time and the kitten was called Casey (by PopPop) so it was before the engagement party.
Love ya,
Ayn
Sis...you got your parties mixed up...Mom, Katie and Madalyn thing was for Janets Shower not my engagement...you are right about the silverware but do you remember the person who was carrying it out to the car when we were leaving, dropped it and it fell down the double flight of stairs ?...box got broken but the tarnish held the spoons and forks together...the untimely death of casey was just a normal saturday cocktail hour that extended into the evening..I had to bury casey in the back yard that night...the perfect end to a perfect day....and your engagement was too formal, I was told by you that I had to wear a suit and tie...and being the bartender that night I was not to comfortable..but anything for my Sis...
hi
i do remember having a good time.also shopping in macy's for your gift which i loved.
love
ya
Sorry, Don, but my memory is correct on this one. Reason - there were many parties in those days where Mom and Aunt Katie did the cooking. Maybe Madalyn wasn't there. But, I can still see the buffet table they set up, though all I ever ate in those days was ham on rye and potato salad and deviled eggs.
If you're accusing moi of dropping the silver, I do not remember that. It would have been the last time I let silver out of my hands.
