I have many fond memories of cousin Joey since we lived so near each other in Astoria.
One memory just came to mind: Since Don graduated from St. Mary's Elementary in Jan. and no longer took the bus, we needed another way for me to get to school. The plan was to walk up to the Conlon's house where I'd meet up with Michael and take the train to St. Mary's. This worked for a few days.
Then one day, literally running late, Don knew that Michael had left, so he pushed me through the door and said Joey would take me. I can still see Joe's surprise as he turned from the sink and saw me standing in the kitchen. He was at a loss and as my heart sank he came up with a solution. He took me on the train which was not the one he needed, told me to go upstairs when we got to Long Island City and continued his journey to college or work. I can still see him waving goodbye.
Of course I took a different stairway to the street than we had taken the few days prior and was totally disoriented. A nice guy said, "What's'a matter goily?" He pointed me in the direction of the school and I arrived late and scared because now I'd get in trouble for being tardy.
That was the last time Don had the job of helping me get to school - new plan, by mother took me to the bus and transfered after one stop so she could get to work and I continued to school. Oh, did I say I was 5 years old?
So thank God for Joey or I'd still be riding that train.
I only met Uncle Joey once or twice that I can recall so didn't know him at all. But, I have only heard great things about him.
Ayn, Your story is too cute and the "Goily" part is the funniest. Just think, because of Don, you eventually got the courage to take the bus all by yourself to Queens Village and see 1000 Clowns with Jason Robards ;-)
I guess in those days a 5 years old on a subway was almost ok, but it still sounds scarey. Thanks for sharing that story.. too funny

Uncle Joey would have been 72??
The last time I saw him he was 51 ... and that seems like yesterday. Boy time does fly the older we get!
Thanks for sharing ...
